Deafinitely Theatre are looking for deaf playwrights

Deafinitely Creative Competition

17 May – 14 July 2010

Deafinitely Creative, the UK’s only playwright programme exclusively for deaf people, is searching for new talent!

For too long, aspiring deaf playwrights have been left out of the theatrical landscape, not through lack of talent but because of lack of access. This programme, run by Britain’s leading Deaf-led, professional theatre company, has developed six Deaf playwrights over the past 3 years and is on the hunt for new talent.

This year we are holding a competition to find four playwrights for the programme. From September 2010, the four finalists will attend workshops led by professional playwright and Deafinitely Theatre’s own dramaturg, Andrew Muir. These workshops will help each of the finalists develop their ideas into their own 30-minute play.

To participate, you only need to be a deaf person living in the UK over the age of 16 with an idea to share. No other experience is necessary.

How To Apply:

1. Send us a summary of your play. This can be in written or BSL form. If you send us a DVD please watch the guidelines in the video below. If in written form, your summary should not be more than 1000 words.

2. Include two pages or 5 minutes of script / dialogue from your play.

3. Include a description of yourself, your background, and why you think this course would be good for you.

4. We need to know your name, age and address.

5. No experience needed – just a willingness to learn!

Deadline: 14th July 2010

Please send your application to:
Martin McLean
Deafinitely Theatre
Unit 20, Deane House Studios
27 Greenwood Place
London NW5 1LB.

Note: If you have attended any Deafinitely Creative Courses in the past you are welcome to apply for the new programme.

Selection Process:

1. Applicants will have their work read by the company and a shortlist of ten writers will be selected.
2. The ten scripts will be read by a carefully selected panel of experts from which four writers will be selected for the programme.

Good Luck!!
