Test out your theatrical ideas at PILOT night in Coventry hosted by Talking Birds

PILOT – Call for Submissions

Wanted: theatricals with strong stomachs.
For: Pilot – a night of short, untested dramatic experiments.

Talking Birds enjoy taking the Pilot jumbo jet for a flight as much as anyone – the ample legroom, the slick safety briefing, the nifty reading lights –  but the runway in Coventry is short, fuel prices are high, and so this time out, we’re taking to the skies in a Sopwith Camel. Still, the thing about small planes is that the clouds are closer and the ride is all the more thrilling. Who doesn’t get an adrenalin rush from seeing the pilots struggle with the controls and ride every airpocket? Plus our cabin crew have stocked up on specialist imported booze, and have artfully designed sick bags.

This is a roundabout way of saying that we’re hosting Pilot at the legendary Taylor Johns, an intimate cabaret venue in Coventry, and so we’re looking for early-stage work which can be performed on a little stage (think 3 metres, by 3 metres), and which seats about 70. There are also only a handful of lights, so work which relies on technical subtlety will be badly served. It’s raw, it’s scrappy, but the atmosphere is second to none, and it’s where some of the best theatre can happen.

If you have 10 -15 minutes of material and you’d like to come on this little adventure with us, fill out an online form – first timers, frequent flyers, have-a-go-heroes, all welcome.

Deadline for submissions: 5pm 25th March 2011.

Performance date: 21st April 2011 at 7.30pm, Taylor Johns, Coal Vaults, Canal Basin, Coventry, West Midlands CV1 4LY.
Location can be found here:

Talking Birds are a company of artists who have been based in Coventry since 1992. Known mainly for their theatre work in decommissioned sites both in this country and abroad, they also work in opera, digital arts, and across artforms. Increasingly, they have been working in actual theatres.
