For Posterity – NEAT11

Andy Barrett’s Threads
Available from Friday 27 May | Continuing throughout NEAT

Threads is a free audio walk for audiences to enjoy in their free time during NEAT.  Using the buildings and history of the Lace Market area of Nottingham, Threads leads the listener through an encounter between two people who have nothing at all in common, but who need each other more than they could possibly imagine.  It is a story about loss, possibility, revolution and angels.

Audio files can be played on your mp3 player or mobile phone and will be available for download, along with a map of the tour route, from Friday 27 May.

Momentum Scratch Night
Wednesday 1 June | 7.00pm | Nottingham Playhouse

We’ve had a very tough time selecting the 10 scripts submitted – by you – for inclusion in our first Scratch Night.  We were overwhelmed with submissions, and would have loved to present them all, but after much deliberation the final shortlist is as follows:

·       Bush by Kei Bailey
·       Sin by Colin Henchley
·       It is for Charity by Susan Spence
·       Knit Two Together by Marilyn Ricci
·       An Empty Chair by Katharine Boon
·       Brenda – Woman of 55 by Alison Belbin
·       The Heist by Jack Dawes
·       Time Never Wait by Sundeep Singh Maan
·       Year Zero by Nicholas Shelton
·       Withering Hearts by Jane Wilton

On the night, each 5-minute script will be read by members of The Actors’ Workshop to an audience at the Playhouse.  This audience will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourite five scripts – and the chosen writers will be asked to develop their ideas into 10-minute plays to be performed a week later at Scratch Night 2!  (See below for details…)

A Double Bill of Readings:
Bygones by Catharine Ashdown &
Premature by Mufaro Makubika
Monday 6 June | 7.00pm | Nottingham Playhouse

After fantastic audience receptions at MOMENTUM 2010, Catharine and Mufaro return to bring you two new plays.  Bygones takes place as tensions rise between two characters on the evening of Clinton’s visit to Northern Ireland.  Premature charts the turbulent relationships of a family put under strain by an impossible moral question, and is a play that promises to be as subtly and emotionally moving as Mufaro’s previous hit, Wallowing.

Mufaro Makubika was on the Royal Court Young Writers programme in 2010 and commissioned by Paines Plough and Nottingham Playhouse for their Come to Where I’m From project.  Catharine Ashdown, playwright and screenwriter, has worked in TV and film as a script editor.

Momentum Scratch Night 2
Wednesday 8 June | 7.00pm | Nottingham Playhouse

By now the audience of Scratch Night 1 will have spoken – and the writers of that night’s favourite five plays will have had one week to revisit their scripts, and craft them into 10-minute pieces.  Join us to hear these hot-off-the-press versions.  Theatre does not come fresher!

When You Whisper, I Imagine…
Thursday 9 & Sunday 12 June | 4.00pm (Thur) & 2.00pm (Sun) | Meet at Nottingham Playhouse

An ambitious and unique collaboration between Andy Barrett and playwrights from Kosovo, Serbia, Czech Republic and Bulgaria.  Andy has sent each writer a package of clues about a city location in Nottingham and each writer will write a 10-minute monologue, in English, for that location. When they come over for the festival we will record their short plays and make them available as free downloads for audiences to listen to in the city.  We hope the effect will fuse the familiar and the unfamiliar, the real and imagined – briefly connecting the extraordinary and mundane elements of urban life hundreds of miles apart.

Audio files will be available for download from Thursday 9 June.  Guided tours of When You Whisper, I Imagine… will meet at the Playhouse on Thursday 9 & Sunday 12 June.  Otherwise audiences are free to enjoy this audio walk in their own time – as with Threads.

Threads Celebration
Sunday 12 June | 3.00pm | Nottingham Playhouse

As NEAT draws to a close we invite anyone who walked the Threads tour to join us at the Playhouse for a drink and a chat about your experiences.  Andy Barrett will be there for an informal discussion and to answer any questions you have about Threads or his work with his European counterparts on When You Whisper, I Imagine…
